Many people know me from my book 'The Anointed Bride: Discover the ancient truth about the use of Anointing and Anointing Oil', which was published in 2016. Because of my book, I have received many questions about Anointing Oil, but also about essential oil. It is interesting to see that these questions came from all walks of life, from churchgoers to church leaders. For me, it is a joy to see how the knowledge of Anointing and Anointing Oil is being restored after so many centuries of absence, even if that knowledge is spreading slowly. However, I also hear more and more people making the assumption that essential oil is the same as Anointing Oil. I also hear how people use essential oil to anoint themselves and others. I have also been asked if I use essential oils myself and if I would be interested in them. Since these questions are increasing, I have decided to answer all these questions in one article.
One of the Bible verses that speaks to me the most, in relation to Anointing, is the following.
This is He who came by water and blood: Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
1 John 5:6-8
Here we see the portion of the three witnesses, which most Christians know nothing about. In the first place, we see the three witnesses in Heaven; the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. It is interesting to see that the Word is mentioned here, because you would expect this verse to say 'the Son'. Yet that is exactly what this verse says, because Christ is the Word made flesh (John 1:1-5). It was the Word, spoken by the Father, that sounded in Heaven and found a way to earth, to become flesh there and live among us. The three witnesses in Heaven are therefore indeed the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one.
At this point, it is important to understand that Heaven is not the only spiritual place. We often assume that Heaven and the spiritual world are above us, but the fact is that the spiritual world is not only above us, but also in our midst. It is all around us. We do not see it, but it is there. The spiritual world runs parallel to our natural world. In other words, what we see in the natural world is a result of what has already taken place in the spiritual world. What has taken place in the spiritual world can become manifest (or accessible) in our natural world through faith. Let me give you an example.
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
This does not tell us that we were healed by His stripes, it does not tell us that we will be healed by His stripes. It says that we ARE healed by His stripes. The way to gain access to that, to make it manifest in our natural world, is through faith. That faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). This means that when we lack faith, we can build it up by proclaiming God's Word until all barriers of unbelief are broken down and the miracle becomes manifest. Sometimes that happens immediately, sometimes it takes weeks, sometimes years, depending on how much faith needs to be built up, how much unbelief needs to be broken down, or the purpose God has with a situation. The moment our faith becomes a stronghold in the spiritual world, then the result of that will be released in the natural world.
With that in mind, there are also three witnesses on earth, which are described as the Spirit, the Water, and the Blood. Yet these are all three spiritual things and they are located in the spiritual world around us. They are invisible to us, although we know they are here on earth. What then is the point of contact and how can we 'connect' with this? Because we need all three of these witnesses and we must be able to make this practical, so that the testimonies become visible and tangible. The answers are simple.
The Blood
In the spiritual world around us, the Blood of Jesus is still present and still testifies. The Blood washes away our sins and cleanses us from the past. What is the point of contact, the practical and tangible thing? It is the Holy Communion. How often do we need this? Daily! Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourself. Read John 6:53, Acts 2:46.
The Water
In the spiritual world around us, the Water is still present and still testifies. The water cleanses and purifies our thoughts, it prevents us from falling again or heading toward destruction. It enables us to grow spiritually and to grow in faith, which opens the door to everything God has to offer us! What is the point of contact, the practical and tangible thing? It is the Word of God. Your Bible. How often do we need this? Daily! Read Hosea 4:6, John 15:3.
The Spirit
In the spiritual world around us, the Spirit is still present and still testifies. The Spirit sanctifies us, resulting in complete restoration, which enables us to live as God created us to live. At that point, the full power of God is released in our lives. What is the point of contact, the practical and tangible thing? It is Anointing Oil. How often do we need this? Daily! Then we are talking about personal use. The people of Israel in the Old Testament, Jesus Christ, His disciples, the first Christians, and all Christians until the ninth century anointed themselves daily. The Anointing of others should only be done as the Holy Spirit leads and instructs. The Anointing emphasizes the end of mourning, complete restoration, and a new beginning. Read Isaiah 10:27, Isaiah 61:3.
Evil robbed the church of its power
During the ninth century, the devil attacked the church specifically on these three witnesses, through corrupt church leaders. The Holy Communion was no longer served daily, and it was forbidden for ordinary people to do this outside the church walls. From that moment on, it became a hollowed-out version of what it had been. The Word of God was translated only into Latin, and all common languages were strictly forbidden. Even the sermons were given in Latin, which no one understood. With that, the knowledge also disappeared. The personal use of Anointing Oil was strictly forbidden. Only the corrupt church leaders were still allowed to use it, and they only wanted to use it for the sick. Until they started to consider this a burden as well. From that moment on, they would only anoint the people who were about to die. Only a few decades ago did the Roman Catholic Church return to this and start anointing the sick again. Still, many Catholics are terrified when they see Anointing Oil, because they associate it with death, while it actually has everything to do with life. After all these sanctions were applied in the ninth century, only a lifeless and powerless church remained. If you can even call it a church. The Holy Spirit had left. How did the enemy manage to use this corrupt church leadership? Because of their desire for control. What is that? It is witchcraft in disguise, as Derek Prince once called it.
Knowing why and how the enemy attacked the church on these three witnesses, I take this very seriously. Each of these three witnesses has a specific task and purpose. By taking away one or all of them, the church is once again robbed of its power. If the enemy cannot do that through leadership, then he will try to do it by twisting the truth, which, by the way, is also the Biblical definition of witchcraft. What is the only way to protect yourself against this? Test all things and hold fast to what is good.
A carrier of blessing or curse
Any object can be used as a carrier of blessing or curse. Every satanist knows this. Everyone in the occult knows this. Every witch knows this. Yet most Christians have no idea of this. If I take an object and speak a curse over it, only to give it away or sell it, then the new owner will immediately experience the consequences. Usually, they have no idea why this is happening or where it comes from. For us, as disciples of Jesus Christ, it is only possible to know what is going on when the Holy Spirit gives us revelation and unmasks the works of the enemy. But didn't I tell you earlier that the spiritual world can only touch the natural world through faith, so how can such a curse be effective? Simple. Through the faith of the one who spoke the curse.
In the same way, God's blessings and curses can also be transferred. Through the Blood (Holy Communion), through the Water (Word of God), and through the Spirit (Anointing). In the case of prayer for the sick, for example, it is the prayer of faith that releases the power of God (James 5:15), not the Anointing Oil itself. It is a point of contact, but it is only activated by faith. In this example of healing, it speaks of the faith of the one who prays. Faith is the activator. Without faith, nothing happens. In the same way, Holy Communion is also a point of contact with the spiritual world. Through participation, it releases life in a sincere heart. Those are they who confess their sins and acknowledge their guilt, without keeping up appearances. In the same way, those who participate with an insincere heart will immediately come under the curse, which amounts to weakness, illness, and even death (1 Corinthians 11:30). In fact, the Lord instructs you to judge yourself or to be judged by Him (verse 31). These are serious things!
Can essential oil be used as Anointing Oil?
Certainly not. It is something totally different. Essential oil is exactly what the word says, pure fragrance oil. Anointing Oil is olive oil (more than 90%) with a scent. Why would we use wine or grape juice for Holy Communion? Let's make it Coca-Cola, right? Why use bread? Let's make it a hamburger, right? Of course not. No one changes the ingredients of Holy Communion. In the same way, essential oil cannot be used as Anointing Oil. But why olive oil? Does it have a special meaning? Yes, certainly.
The more we die to ourselves, the more room it will provide for God in our lives. It is not an easy road and not an easy process. Often it will be painful. Your dreams, your emotions, your will, and your desires will at times seem to be completely crushed. Perhaps even for a long time. In this day and age, we are so accustomed to instant results that we completely forget that most people in the Bible had to wait for years before they started to see or experience even a fraction of God's promises. Their dreams, emotions, will, and desires were completely crushed for a very long time. But the result of the promise that followed was so much greater than their suffering.
We learn through trials, through misery, and through pain. That is how we are spiritually formed. That is the way to grow to spiritual maturity and to the increase of God's Anointing in our lives. The image of the oil is an example of that. All the potential, all the talents, and even the Anointing have been placed in your life by God. But the only way to get it out and to get the purest form of it is in exactly the same way as how the oil is extracted. Just as the olives must be crushed to get the oil out, our 'flesh' must also be crushed, according to the example that Jesus Christ gave us. Just as the freshly pressed oil must be heated to remove all impurities and make it pure, we must also pass through the fire in the same way. To be clear, that is not the same fire as hellfire. The fire of God can best be described as the purifying and cleansing fire of His passion and love. Although it may be painful at this moment, it will change you into everything God wants you to be. It speaks of God's power, released in your weakness. True health and strength come from above.
Who gets the glory?
Then there is another very important aspect. Who gets the glory? Do we honor the creation or the Creator? Do we praise the healing or the Healer? Do we worship the deliverance or the Deliverer? Many essential oils have natural healing properties. Just as we know it is healthy for us to eat fruits and vegetables. In the best-case scenario, God will be thanked for creating these natural sources, but the glory goes to the oil, because of the healing properties. It takes no faith. Absolutely nothing. With or without faith, the essential oil will do what it was made for. It is the classic case of cause and effect. Anointing Oil, however, the real Anointing Oil that is, which is made from olive oil, will do absolutely nothing on its own. It possesses no healing power whatsoever and it is not a medicine either. Only when it is used with faith, then the power of God is released. Guess Who then gets the glory? God! Because it is His power that saves, heals, delivers, and restores. That has absolutely nothing to do with the Anointing Oil and everything with His love for us. It is about the right focus and doing what He says. God has consciously chosen to pick something that is weak and powerless in itself.
On top of that, I have also seen with my own eyes that there are many dubious oils among the essential oils. I have seen many symbols and names on various bottles that are also used in satanism, occultism, and witchcraft. And I am talking about the most famous brand of essential oils. I know that these things have power and influence the lives of the people who use them. It is an open door for the enemy to enter your life when you voluntarily choose to allow these symbols and names into your home or apply the oil to your body. I am not saying that all essential oils are wrong, I am saying that it is a mix of good and wrong and that you have to be very wary in the choice of oils you make. You simply cannot know with what (real) intention an essential oil was made. What words have been spoken over the oil? Have any words been spoken over the oil at all? Does it carry a curse with it? Be assured that there is a reason why satanists, occultists, and witches use these oils and in some cases even make them.
Whether or not to use essential oils
I am not going to say whether you may or should use essential oil. Then it very quickly becomes legalistic and I want to stay far away from that. As a Christian, we have a common Friend and that is the Holy Spirit. If you still want to use essential oils, then I want to encourage you to test every scent and every bottle together with the Holy Spirit. Simply ask Him to reveal and unmask the plans of the enemy and to give you open eyes. That way you can know which essential oils you can safely use and which not. But when you use them, use them for your own purpose and not for the Anointing.
Do I use essential oils myself? No. I do not condemn the people who do use them, but personally, I will never use them. It is not that I am afraid of them, I just do not feel attracted to them. Again, that is a personal thing. What I say should not influence your choice to use them or not. The only thing that matters is what God has to say about it. I pray that you may receive clear vision at this moment, in the mighty name of JESUS CHRIST! Now you know. Now you are aware of the differences. Now it is up to you to start testing all of this.
