Hyssop stands for holy fire, purification, and empowerment. Hyssop is a low-growing and evergreen bushy herb that can grow between 30 and 60 cm tall. It is cultivated for its flowering tops, from which the scent is extracted. The herb grows in dry climates on rocky soil and out of cracks in old walls, such as in the area of the ancient temple in Jerusalem. Hyssop was once a so-called “Holy Herb,” because it was used for sprinkling in the ritual practices of the Hebrews. Exodus 12:22 states: “Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin, and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe...” Due to the reference in Numbers 19:6 (“The priest is to take some cedar wood, hyssop and scarlet wool and throw them onto the burning heifer.”), this scent has earned the nickname “Holy Fire.” Hyssop speaks of spiritual cleansing through the sanctifying fire of the Holy Spirit and is best described as a “fresh, clean-smelling” aroma.
